Mauritius (c) 2001

Unlike other holidays, this holiday was to the surprise of all not a dull vacation. Anyway, time has passed, and things have changed. History. But please read on.

The hotel: Surrounded by coconut trees, enclosing 7 hectars of garden, and a wonderful pool. On the left you can see the old lighthouse, remainings from the fortification, which gives the hotel hist name: Le Canonnier.
Set on a peninsula, the hotel is fringed by three beaches which make of this place a perfect hideaway.

Beaches around Grand Baie are very clean, but water around the island are often very shallow. It was difficult for us to get out on the riff for snorkling, because walking wasn't that good idea, a lot of a species with pricks, sea urchins, were lurking around.
And to get a seat on the boat was sometimes not that easy.

A stunning view from the Montagne Cocotte.
Beside the production of sugar cane, the
island is coverd with rain forest and banana trees.
Pamplemousses, 11 km north-east of Port Luis, accomodate the 'Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden', is full of smell - ginger, cinnamon, nutmen, camphor - and others. Here are some huge Water Lilies, around 1 m diameter.

Blooming Coconut Trees, also in the Botanical Garden.
Take a map with you, otherwise you have the same fortune and get lost in the wide area, or you miss something.
Port Luis, by earlier Dutch settlers called 'Noordt Wester Haven', ist the burgeoning Maurition capital with a population around 150.000, is a large city in proportion to the the size of the island, but relatively small considering the total population of the country.

Port Luis have a mixture of English and French street names, which makes it very difficult to orientate. They mix up 'rue', 'road', 'street' and 'road', have similar-sounding names and half way renamed streets, depending on who has fallen in or out of favour.
